Collection: Bowel & Colon Cleanse Support

A Clean Colon Is the Foundation of Everything

The colon is the body's primary waste elimination channel. When it becomes sluggish, congested, or impacted, the downstream effects are felt throughout the body — in energy levels, skin clarity, immune function, and overall wellbeing. A well-supported bowel is not a luxury; it is a foundation.

This collection is built around a simple, three-step approach: stimulate, soften, and restore. Each step works with the body's natural elimination processes — not against them.

The 3-Step Bowel & Colon Cleanse Protocol

Step 1 — Stimulate: Get Things Moving

Before the colon can be cleansed, it needs to be activated. Herbal stimulant laxatives work by gently increasing peristalsis — the rhythmic muscular contractions that move waste through the intestinal tract.

Cascara Sagrada (Sacred Bark) is one of the most respected herbal laxatives in Western botanical medicine. Its active compounds — anthraquinone glycosides, particularly cascarosides — are converted by gut bacteria into compounds that stimulate the large intestine. Unlike harsh chemical laxatives, Cascara works gently and predictably, typically producing a bowel movement within 6–12 hours.

Traditional use: Cascara has been used by Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest for centuries and was listed in the United States Pharmacopeia from 1890 to 1975.

Dr. Christopher's Lower Bowel Formula is a classic herbal combination formula developed by the late Dr. John R. Christopher — one of the most influential herbalists of the 20th century. The formula combines Cascara Sagrada with complementary herbs including Barberry bark, Cayenne, Ginger, Lobelia, Red Raspberry leaf, Turkey Rhubarb root, and Fennel seed. Together, these herbs support peristalsis, reduce intestinal cramping, and address the underlying tone and function of the bowel — not just the symptom of constipation.

Dr. Christopher's Lower Bowel Formula is a foundational product in this collection and a good starting point for those new to herbal bowel support.

Step 2 — Soften & Bulk: Support Comfortable Elimination

Stimulation alone is not enough. Dry, hard stool is difficult to pass and can cause straining and discomfort. Softening agents and bulking fibres work alongside stimulant herbs to make elimination easier and more complete.

  • Psyllium Husk — a soluble fibre that absorbs water and forms a gel-like bulk, softening stool and supporting regularity. Also acts as a prebiotic, feeding beneficial gut bacteria.
  • Slippery Elm Bark — a demulcent herb that coats and soothes the intestinal lining, reducing irritation and supporting the passage of waste. Traditionally used for both constipation and diarrhoea — it normalises rather than forces.
  • Magnesium — draws water into the intestines osmotically, softening stool and supporting smooth muscle relaxation. Magnesium deficiency is one of the most common contributors to chronic constipation.

Step 3 — Restore: Rebuild After Cleansing

A cleanse creates an opportunity — but only if the gut environment is restored afterwards. After stimulating elimination, it is important to replenish beneficial bacteria, soothe the intestinal lining, and support the conditions for long-term gut health.

  • Probiotics — reintroduce beneficial bacteria displaced during cleansing. Look for multi-strain formulas including Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species.
  • Akkermansia muciniphila — supports the mucosal lining of the gut wall, which can be depleted during intensive cleansing. Akkermansia feeds on polyphenols and stimulates mucus production — a key part of long-term gut barrier integrity.
  • Lactobacillus reuteri — produces reuterin, a natural antimicrobial compound, and supports a balanced gut microbial environment post-cleanse. Also studied for its role in gut-brain axis signalling and immune support.
  • Gumpii (Pittosporum angustifolium) — a polyphenol-rich Australian native botanical that acts as a prebiotic substrate for beneficial bacteria including Akkermansia. Research (Netzel et al., 2020, Foods, MDPI) has characterised its significant antioxidant and bioactive compound profile.
  • Australian Mistletoe (Loranthaceae) — a native polyphenol-rich botanical that provides prebiotic substrate for beneficial gut bacteria, supporting the conditions in which Akkermansia and other beneficial species thrive.
  • Slippery Elm — also plays a role in restoration, soothing and coating the intestinal lining as it recovers.

Who This Collection Is For

This collection is suited to those experiencing occasional or chronic constipation, those undertaking a seasonal or periodic cleanse, those transitioning to a higher-fibre diet, or those who feel their digestion has become sluggish and want to reset their gut environment.

A bowel cleanse is not a one-time event — it is a practice. Regular, gentle support of elimination is one of the most impactful things you can do for your overall health.

A Note on Safe Use

Stimulant laxative herbs including Cascara Sagrada and those in Dr. Christopher's Lower Bowel Formula are intended for short-term use. Prolonged use without breaks may reduce the bowel's natural muscle tone. Always use as directed, stay well hydrated, and consult your healthcare practitioner if you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or are taking medications.
