Liquid Iodine as Potassium Iodide

Iodine is an essential trace mineral that the body cannot produce on its own — it must be obtained through diet or supplementation. It is a critical component of thyroid hormones T3 and T4, which regulate metabolism, energy production, and numerous other physiological processes. Many people in modern populations have insufficient iodine intake due to depleted soils and reduced consumption of iodine-rich foods.

This formulation uses potassium iodide — a well-absorbed, bioavailable form of iodine that is preferred for thyroid uptake. It contains no kelp, ensuring clean and consistent dosing without the risk of heavy metal contamination associated with some seaweed-derived iodine products.

Why Potassium Iodide

  • Well-absorbed — potassium iodide is a highly bioavailable form of iodine
  • Thyroid-preferred — readily taken up by thyroid tissue
  • No kelp — clean, consistent dosing without heavy metal concerns
  • Liquid format — easy to dose and adjust

How Iodine Affects the Body

Thyroid Function

Iodine is essential for the synthesis of thyroid hormones T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine). These hormones regulate metabolism, energy levels, body temperature, heart rate, and numerous other physiological processes. Without adequate iodine, the thyroid cannot produce sufficient hormones — a condition that can lead to goitre (enlarged thyroid) and hypothyroidism, with symptoms including fatigue, weight gain, brain fog, and cold intolerance.

Metabolism Regulation

Adequate iodine intake directly supports metabolic processes by enabling proper thyroid hormone production. Thyroid hormones influence how every cell in the body uses energy — making iodine status a foundational factor in metabolic health, healthy weight, and sustained energy levels.

Development & Cognitive Function

Iodine is crucial for proper neurological development in foetuses and infants. Iodine deficiency during pregnancy is one of the leading preventable causes of cognitive impairment worldwide. Adequate iodine supports brain development, cognitive function, and physical growth in early life.

Broader Body Systems

Beyond the thyroid, iodine is found in many tissues throughout the body including the breasts, ovaries, prostate, skin, and salivary glands. It plays a broader role in supporting immune function, antioxidant activity, and healthy mucous membrane function.

Iodine Deficiency

Iodine deficiency is recognised as one of the most common nutritional deficiencies worldwide. Signs of insufficient iodine can include:

  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Feeling cold
  • Brain fog and poor concentration
  • Dry skin and hair loss
  • Swelling in the neck (goitre)

How to Use

Use as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Start low and increase gradually. Not to be taken without practitioner guidance if you have a thyroid condition.

Precautions

Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding without practitioner supervision. Not suitable for those with hyperthyroidism or autoimmune thyroid conditions without medical guidance. Do not exceed recommended doses. Consult your healthcare practitioner before use.

Stack This With

  • Selenium — essential companion for thyroid support and T4 to T3 conversion; 150mcg recommended alongside iodine supplementation
  • Magnesium Glycinate — mineral balance and nervous system support; 400mg commonly used alongside iodine protocols
  • Gumpii Extract — foundational botanical base

Note: unrefined salt (1/4 teaspoon daily for the first 2 weeks) is a common recommendation in iodine supplementation protocols. Always consult your healthcare practitioner before beginning iodine supplementation, particularly if you have a thyroid condition or are taking thyroid medication.
