NAC (N-Acetylcysteine) 600mg
NAC (N-Acetylcysteine) is a stable, bioavailable form of the conditionally essential amino acid L-cysteine. It is one of the most important and extensively researched dietary supplements in contemporary nutritional science — primarily valued for its role as the rate-limiting precursor to glutathione, the body's primary endogenous antioxidant and detoxification molecule. NAC is also a naturally occurring sulphur-containing compound with a broad range of nutritional roles in cellular, respiratory, liver, and immune wellness.
NAC & Glutathione — The Body's Master Antioxidant
Glutathione is a tripeptide molecule — composed of three amino acids: glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine — and is the most abundant and important endogenous antioxidant in the human body. It is found in virtually every cell and plays a central role in antioxidant defence, detoxification, immune function, and cellular redox balance.
The body cannot efficiently use supplemental glutathione directly — it must synthesise it from its three amino acid precursors. Of these three, cysteine is the rate-limiting precursor — meaning it is the one most likely to be in short supply, and the one that most limits glutathione synthesis. NAC provides a stable, bioavailable source of cysteine, making it the most effective dietary supplement for supporting the body's own glutathione synthesis.
The Glutathione Precursor Trio
For optimal glutathione synthesis support, three precursors work together:
- NAC — provides cysteine, the rate-limiting precursor; the most critical of the three for glutathione synthesis support
- Vitamin C (Sodium Ascorbate) — recycles oxidised glutathione (GSSG) back to its active reduced form (GSH), extending glutathione activity
- Whey Protein (unflavoured only) — provides glycine and glutamic acid, the other two amino acid building blocks of glutathione. Use unflavoured whey only — ConsumerLab testing revealed that chocolate-flavoured whey protein products may contain elevated levels of heavy metals, including lead and cadmium. Always choose a clean, unflavoured, third-party tested whey protein.
Together, these three form a comprehensive glutathione synthesis support protocol — each playing a distinct and complementary role. NAC is the foundation.
NAC & Immune Support — What the Research Shows
NAC has attracted significant research interest for its role in immune and respiratory wellness. A study discussed by Dr Andrew Huberman (Huberman Lab — How to Prevent & Treat Colds & Flu) found that only 25% of participants taking NAC contracted influenza, compared to 79% in the placebo group — a striking difference that has generated considerable interest in NAC as a seasonal immune support supplement.
The proposed mechanism: NAC increases glutathione levels, which reduces reactive oxygen and nitrogen species — compounds that are elevated during infection and contribute to the severity of symptoms. By supporting the body's antioxidant defences, NAC may help moderate the inflammatory response during infection.
NAC also acts as a mucolytic agent — it helps loosen and thin mucus, alleviating sinus pressure and congestion. This makes it a useful respiratory support tool during colds and flu, and a preferable alternative to conventional decongestants that can cause rebound congestion.
Dosage Guidance (from published research)
The following dosage information is drawn from peer-reviewed research as discussed by Dr Andrew Huberman. Always consult your healthcare practitioner before use.
- Preventive use — 1,200mg per day, divided into two doses of 600mg each
- Symptomatic use (during a cold or flu) — 900mg three times per day; avoid taking close to bedtime as increased mucus flow may disrupt sleep
Our NAC is 600mg per capsule, making it easy to follow either protocol.
Key Nutritional Roles of NAC
- Glutathione synthesis support — NAC is the rate-limiting precursor to glutathione; the most effective dietary supplement for supporting the body's own glutathione production
- Immune & respiratory wellness — supports mucosal lining of the respiratory tract; mucolytic properties help loosen mucus and ease congestion
- Liver & detoxification wellness — glutathione is the primary molecule used by the liver in phase II detoxification; NAC is used clinically to treat paracetamol (acetaminophen) overdose, demonstrating its well-established hepatoprotective properties
- Antioxidant wellness — through its role as a glutathione precursor, NAC supports the body's primary endogenous antioxidant defence system
- Neurological & psychological wellness — NAC influences glutamate levels in the brain; research has explored potential benefits for mood, cognitive function, and neurological wellness; glutathione is found in high concentrations in the brain
- Skin wellness — glutathione plays a role in skin antioxidant defence; NAC supports skin wellness through glutathione synthesis support
- Kidney & urinary wellness — NAC supports kidney wellness through its antioxidant and glutathione-supporting properties
How to Use
Take 1 capsule (600mg) up to 3 times daily as a dietary supplement, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Best taken on an empty stomach or between meals for optimal absorption. Can be taken with Vitamin C to support glutathione recycling. Avoid taking high doses close to bedtime.
Precautions
Generally well tolerated. May cause mild nausea if taken on an empty stomach — take with a small amount of food if needed. Consult your healthcare practitioner before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Consult your healthcare practitioner before use if you are taking nitroglycerin or blood-thinning medications. Consult your healthcare practitioner before use if you have asthma — inhaled NAC can cause bronchospasm in some individuals (oral supplementation is generally well tolerated). Keep out of reach of children.
