Organic Bladderwrack Extract (Fucus vesiculosus)

Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus) is a brown seaweed (macroalgae) native to the coastlines of the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, with a long history of traditional use in European coastal communities as both a food and a medicinal herb. It has been used in Western herbal medicine for centuries and was one of the first sources of iodine identified in the scientific literature, with its iodine content documented as early as the 19th century.

Bladderwrack belongs to the Fucaceae family and is characterised by its distinctive air-filled bladders (vesicles) that give it buoyancy. It is one of the most iodine-rich plants used in Western herbal medicine and is classified as a nutritive, alterative, and thyroid trophorestorative herb in traditional herbal practice. This extract is prepared in 60% alcohol from certified organic Bladderwrack thallus.

Traditional Herbal Use

Iodine & Thyroid Nutritional Wellness

Bladderwrack is one of the most widely used herbs in Western herbal medicine in the context of iodine and thyroid nutritional wellness. Iodine is an essential mineral required for normal thyroid hormone synthesis, and Bladderwrack has a long traditional history of use as a natural iodine source in herbal practice. It is classified as a thyroid trophorestorative herb in Western herbal medicine — a category of herbs traditionally used to nourish and support thyroid wellness. Important: due to its naturally high iodine content, Bladderwrack should only be used under the guidance of a qualified healthcare practitioner, particularly for those with thyroid conditions or taking thyroid medications.

Metabolic Wellness

Bladderwrack has a long traditional history of use in Western herbal medicine for metabolic wellness, closely linked to its iodine content and traditional thyroid wellness applications. It is one of the most classic herbs in traditional herbal practice for metabolic support.

Digestive & Gastrointestinal Wellness

Bladderwrack has a traditional history of use for digestive wellness. Its naturally occurring alginic acid and mucilaginous compounds have made it a traditional inclusion in herbal formulas for digestive and gastrointestinal support.

Cardiovascular & Antioxidant Wellness

Bladderwrack is one of the most researched marine botanicals in the context of cardiovascular and antioxidant wellness. Its naturally occurring fucoidan and phlorotannin content have generated significant scientific research interest, and it has a traditional history of use in coastal communities for cardiovascular wellness.

How to Use

Take 20–30 drops under the tongue or in a little juice or water, up to 2–3 times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner.

Precautions

Important — high iodine content: Bladderwrack contains naturally high levels of iodine. Excessive iodine intake can adversely affect thyroid function in both directions — in those with and without existing thyroid conditions. This product should only be used under the guidance of a qualified healthcare practitioner. Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding without practitioner guidance. Not recommended for those with hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, or iodine sensitivity without specific practitioner guidance. May interact with thyroid medications — consult your healthcare practitioner before use if you are taking any thyroid medications or medications affected by iodine intake.
