Vitamin B12 — Fully Active Methylcobalamin 1500mcg

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is an essential water-soluble vitamin that the body cannot synthesise on its own and must obtain through diet or supplementation. It is naturally found in animal-derived foods including meat, fish, eggs, and dairy — making it a nutrient of particular relevance for those following plant-based diets.

This product provides B12 as Methylcobalamin — the fully active, coenzyme form of B12 that the body can utilise directly, without requiring conversion. This distinguishes it from Cyanocobalamin, the synthetic form commonly used in lower-cost supplements, which must be converted by the body before use.

About Methylcobalamin

Methylcobalamin is one of two active coenzyme forms of Vitamin B12 (the other being Adenosylcobalamin). It is the predominant form found in human blood plasma and is directly involved in methylation reactions — a fundamental biochemical process involved in DNA synthesis, amino acid metabolism, and fatty acid metabolism.

Vitamin B12 is an essential cofactor in two key enzymatic reactions in the body: the conversion of homocysteine to methionine (requiring Methylcobalamin) and the conversion of methylmalonyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA (requiring Adenosylcobalamin). These reactions are central to normal cellular function.

Nutritional Role

  • DNA synthesis — B12 is an essential cofactor in DNA replication and repair
  • Methylation — involved in the methylation cycle alongside folate and B6
  • Amino acid metabolism — involved in the conversion of homocysteine to methionine
  • Fatty acid metabolism — involved in the metabolism of odd-chain fatty acids
  • Red blood cell formation — B12 is an essential nutrient for normal red blood cell maturation in the bone marrow
  • Nervous system — B12 is involved in the maintenance of the myelin sheath surrounding nerve fibres

Who May Benefit from B12 Supplementation

  • Those following vegan or vegetarian diets — B12 is found almost exclusively in animal-derived foods
  • Older adults — B12 absorption naturally declines with age due to reduced intrinsic factor production
  • Those taking metformin or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) — these medications are associated with reduced B12 absorption
  • Those with digestive conditions affecting nutrient absorption

How to Use

Take 1 vegan capsule daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. As with all supplements, periodic breaks are a reasonable practice — taking 1–2 days off per week is a common approach to support nutritional balance over time.

Precautions

B12 is generally very well tolerated. Consult your healthcare practitioner before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have a known B12 absorption condition (such as pernicious anaemia) that may require higher doses or injectable B12.
