Vitamin B1 (Benfotiamine) is a fat-soluble form of thiamin, offering enhanced absorption and longer-lasting benefits compared to standard water-soluble forms. As part of the vital B vitamin group, it supports numerous functions including nerve and muscle health, carbohydrate metabolism, electrolyte balance in nerve and muscle cells, and the production of stomach acid for proper digestion. It also plays a critical role in energy production, glucose metabolism, heart function, cell growth, immune defence, and brain health. Traditionally used in Western medicine to support the nervous system and the myelin sheath, Benfotiamine has been effective in treating symptoms such as tingling and numbness in the hands and feet, muscle weakness, poor reflexes, and conditions like beriberi and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. Because B1 deficiency can mimic other conditions like diabetes, heart failure, neurological disorders, GBS, IBS, and Crohn’s, maintaining healthy levels is crucial—especially after gastric bypass surgery, when absorption may be reduced.
