Vitamin K2 (MK-7)
Vitamin K2 is a fat-soluble vitamin belonging to the Vitamin K family, which also includes Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone). While Vitamin K1 is primarily involved in blood clotting, Vitamin K2 plays a distinct and critical role in calcium metabolism — directing calcium to the bones and teeth where it is needed, and supporting its appropriate distribution away from soft tissues. Vitamin K2 is found naturally in fermented foods (particularly natto, a traditional Japanese fermented soybean food), certain cheeses, and animal products.
This product provides Vitamin K2 in the MK-7 (menaquinone-7) form — the most bioavailable and longest-acting form of Vitamin K2 available as a dietary supplement. MK-7 has a significantly longer half-life than MK-4, providing more sustained Vitamin K2 activity from a single daily dose. Available in 200mcg and 300mcg strengths, in 60 or 120 capsule bottles.
Key Nutritional Roles of Vitamin K2
- Calcium metabolism & bone mineralisation — Vitamin K2 is required for the activation of osteocalcin, a protein produced by osteoblasts that is essential for incorporating calcium into bone matrix; it is one of the most important nutrients for bone mineralisation and density wellness
- Cardiovascular wellness — Vitamin K2 is required for the activation of Matrix Gla Protein (MGP), a protein that plays a key role in supporting healthy calcium distribution in vascular tissue; MGP is one of the most potent naturally occurring inhibitors of vascular calcification known
- Dental wellness — Vitamin K2 activates osteocalcin in dentine, supporting tooth mineralisation and dental wellness
- Metabolic wellness — Vitamin K2 plays a role in insulin sensitivity and carbohydrate metabolism; it is required for the activation of several Gla proteins involved in metabolic function
- Mitochondrial & energy wellness — Vitamin K2 has been shown in research to support mitochondrial function and ATP production; it plays a role in the electron transport chain
- Hormonal wellness — Vitamin K2 plays a role in steroid hormone metabolism and testosterone synthesis
- Neurological wellness — Vitamin K2 is found in high concentrations in the brain and plays a role in sphingolipid synthesis, a key component of myelin and neuronal membranes
Why MK-7?
MK-7 (menaquinone-7) is the most bioavailable and longest-acting form of Vitamin K2. Unlike MK-4, which has a half-life of approximately 1–2 hours, MK-7 has a half-life of approximately 72 hours — providing sustained Vitamin K2 activity from a single daily dose. MK-7 is derived from natto fermentation and is the form most extensively researched in the context of bone and cardiovascular wellness.
Vitamin K2 & Vitamin D3
Vitamin K2 and Vitamin D3 work synergistically in calcium metabolism. Vitamin D3 supports calcium absorption from the gut, while Vitamin K2 activates the proteins (osteocalcin and MGP) that direct calcium to appropriate tissues. For this reason, Vitamin K2 and Vitamin D3 are commonly taken together in nutritional practice. A traditional guideline used in nutritional practice is a 1:2.5 ratio of K2 to D3 — for example, 200mcg K2 with 500mcg (20,000 IU) D3, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner.
Which Strength?
- 200mcg — suitable for general daily Vitamin K2 nutritional support and maintenance
- 300mcg — suitable for those with higher Vitamin K2 requirements as determined by their healthcare practitioner
How to Use
Take 1 capsule daily as a dietary supplement with a meal containing fat (Vitamin K2 is fat-soluble and is best absorbed with dietary fat), or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Best taken alongside Vitamin D3 for synergistic calcium metabolism support.
Precautions
Important: Vitamin K2 may interact with blood-thinning medications (anticoagulants) including warfarin — consult your healthcare practitioner before use if you are taking any anticoagulant or blood-thinning medication. Consult your healthcare practitioner before use if you have kidney disease or are on dialysis. Consult your healthcare practitioner before use if you have G6PD deficiency. Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding without practitioner guidance. Keep out of reach of children.
