Cascara Sagrada 450mg — Aged Sacred Bark Capsules

Cascara Sagrada — meaning “sacred bark” in Spanish — is derived from the aged bark of Rhamnus purshiana, a tree native to the Pacific Northwest of North America. It has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine as a digestive and bowel support herb, and is one of the most well-documented botanicals in Western herbal practice for supporting healthy elimination.

Cascara Sagrada was notably championed by the late biologist and physiologist Dr. Ray Peat, PhD, who considered it a uniquely supportive herb for bowel health and metabolic function — distinct from conventional laxative herbs in its mechanism and broader botanical profile.

Naturally Occurring Compounds

  • Anthraquinones — including emodin and cascarosides; the primary naturally occurring compounds in the aged bark
  • Tannins and resins — naturally present in the bark
  • Flavonoids — contributing to the herb’s broad phytochemical profile

Ageing the bark for a minimum of one year is essential — it converts harsh fresh compounds into milder anthraquinone glycosides, producing a gentler preparation.

Traditional Herbal Use

Digestive & Bowel Wellness

Cascara Sagrada has been used for centuries in traditional herbal medicine to support healthy bowel function and regularity. Unlike many stimulant laxative herbs, it is traditionally considered to work by supporting the natural motility of the bowel rather than through irritation.

Liver & Bile Support

Traditionally used in herbal practice to support liver function and healthy bile flow as part of a broader digestive wellness routine.

The Ray Peat Perspective

Dr. Ray Peat wrote extensively about Cascara Sagrada, describing it as “unlike any other laxative” and noting that it “reinforces everything our own system does.” Peat was particularly interested in its emodin content and its potential role in supporting mitochondrial function and reducing the burden of intestinal endotoxins — a key focus of his broader metabolic framework. These perspectives are based on Peat’s own research and writings and are presented here for informational context.
