Organic Marshmallow Root Extract (Althaea officinalis)
Marshmallow Root (Althaea officinalis) is a perennial herb native to Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa, with a documented history of medicinal use spanning over 2,000 years. Its name derives from the Greek altho meaning “to heal” — a reflection of its long-standing reputation in traditional herbal medicine. It was used extensively in ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman medicine, and remained a staple of European herbal traditions throughout the medieval period.
Marshmallow Root is classified as a demulcent and emollient herb in Western herbal medicine — categories of herbs traditionally used to soothe and protect mucous membranes throughout the digestive, respiratory, and urinary tracts. Its exceptionally high mucilage content is the defining characteristic of this herb. This extract is prepared in 60% alcohol from certified organic Marshmallow Root.
Traditional Herbal Use
Digestive & Gastrointestinal Wellness
Marshmallow Root is one of the most classic demulcent herbs in Western herbal medicine for digestive and gastrointestinal wellness. Its high mucilage content has made it a traditional inclusion in herbal formulas for soothing and supporting the mucous membranes of the digestive tract. It is widely used in traditional herbal practice for digestive comfort and gastrointestinal wellness.
Respiratory & Throat Wellness
Marshmallow Root has a long traditional history of use in Western herbal medicine for respiratory and throat wellness. Its demulcent properties have made it a classic inclusion in traditional herbal formulas for throat and upper respiratory support, and it is one of the most widely used herbs in traditional practice for respiratory wellness.
Urinary & Kidney Wellness
Marshmallow Root has a traditional history of use in Western herbal medicine for urinary and kidney wellness. Its soothing mucilaginous properties have made it a classic inclusion in traditional herbal formulas for urinary tract wellness.
Children’s Wellness
Marshmallow Root is one of the gentlest herbs in the Western herbal tradition and has a long history of use for children’s wellness, particularly for digestive and respiratory support. Always consult a healthcare practitioner for appropriate dosing for children.
How to Use
Take 20–30 drops under the tongue or in a little juice or water, up to 2–3 times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Note: cold water extraction preserves mucilage content better than hot water — this tincture format provides a convenient alternative to traditional cold infusions.
Precautions
Generally very well tolerated. Consult your healthcare practitioner before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. High mucilage content may slow the absorption of medications — take at least 1 hour away from any medications.
