Organic Mediterranean Oregano Extract (Origanum vulgare)

Mediterranean Oregano (Origanum vulgare) is a perennial herb native to the Mediterranean basin and western Asia, with a documented history of culinary and medicinal use spanning over 2,500 years across Greek, Roman, and broader European herbal traditions. The name derives from the Greek oros (mountain) and ganos (joy) — “joy of the mountain” — reflecting its abundance in the wild mountain landscapes of the Mediterranean.

Mediterranean Oregano is distinct from common culinary oregano in its significantly higher carvacrol and thymol content — the primary bioactive phenolic compounds responsible for its potent traditional properties. Wild-harvested or organically grown Mediterranean Oregano from high-altitude regions is consistently higher in these compounds than commercially grown varieties. It is classified as a carminative, expectorant, and immune tonic herb in Western herbal medicine. This extract is prepared in 60% alcohol from certified organic Mediterranean Oregano aerial parts.

Naturally Occurring Compounds

  • Carvacrol — the primary bioactive phenolic compound in Mediterranean Oregano; naturally occurring monoterpenoid phenol; one of the most extensively researched naturally occurring plant compounds and the key marker of Oregano quality and potency. Carvacrol has been the subject of significant peer-reviewed scientific research interest in the context of microbial wellness, including research into its interactions with microbial cell membranes and biofilm formation (Magi et al., 2023, PMC10418746; Myszka et al., 2023, MDPI Foods 12(15):2893)
  • Thymol — a naturally occurring monoterpenoid phenol closely related to carvacrol; present alongside carvacrol in Mediterranean Oregano; also the subject of scientific research interest in the context of microbial wellness
  • Rosmarinic acid — a naturally occurring caffeic acid ester; a key antioxidant compound in Oregano and other Lamiaceae herbs
  • Flavonoids — including luteolin, apigenin, and quercetin
  • Ursolic acid and oleanolic acid — naturally occurring triterpenoids present in the aerial parts
  • Volatile oils — including γ-terpinene, p-cymene, and β-caryophyllene
