Plant Enzymes
Digestive enzymes are biological catalysts that break down food into absorbable nutrients — they are essential for the digestion of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and fibre, and for the absorption of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients from food. Without adequate digestive enzyme activity, even a nutrient-dense diet may not deliver its full nutritional benefit — nutrients that are not properly broken down cannot be absorbed and utilised by the body.
This broad-spectrum plant enzyme complex provides a comprehensive range of plant-derived digestive enzymes including protease, amylase, lipase, cellulase, and disaccharidase — covering all major macronutrient categories. Plant-derived enzymes are active across a wider pH range than animal-derived enzymes (such as pancreatin), making them effective throughout the digestive tract from the stomach to the small intestine.
Enzyme Activity by Macronutrient
- Protease — breaks down dietary proteins into peptides and amino acids; required for protein absorption and utilisation
- Amylase — breaks down dietary carbohydrates and starches into simple sugars; supports carbohydrate digestion and absorption
- Lipase — breaks down dietary fats (triglycerides) into fatty acids and glycerol; required for fat absorption and fat-soluble vitamin utilisation
- Cellulase — breaks down cellulose (plant fibre); not produced by the human body — plant-derived cellulase supports the digestion of plant cell walls and the release of nutrients from plant foods
- Disaccharidase — breaks down disaccharide sugars (including lactose, sucrose, and maltose) into monosaccharides for absorption; supports carbohydrate and sugar digestion
Why Digestive Enzyme Support?
The body's natural digestive enzyme production can be affected by a range of factors including age, stress, gut inflammation, dietary patterns, and overall digestive wellness. Gastric acid production and pancreatic enzyme output naturally decline with age — making digestive enzyme support particularly relevant for those over 50. Plant-based digestive enzyme supplementation is a well-established nutritional practice for supporting digestive wellness and nutrient absorption across all age groups.
Plant Enzymes & Betaine HCL — A Classic Digestive Wellness Pairing
Plant Enzymes and Betaine HCL are frequently used together in nutritional practice as a comprehensive digestive wellness pairing — particularly for those over 60. Gastric acid (hydrochloric acid) is required to activate pepsin (the primary protein-digesting enzyme in the stomach) and to create the acidic environment needed for optimal digestive enzyme activity in the stomach. As gastric acid production naturally declines with age, combining plant enzymes with Betaine HCL supports both the enzymatic and acid components of healthy digestion.

How to Use
Take 1–3 capsules with each meal, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Best taken at the beginning of a meal to support digestion of that meal. Dose can be adjusted based on meal size and composition — larger or higher-fat meals may benefit from a higher dose within the recommended range.
Precautions
Generally very well tolerated. Not recommended for those with active gastric or duodenal ulcers without practitioner guidance. Consult your healthcare practitioner before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Consult your healthcare practitioner before use if you are taking medications — digestive enzymes may affect the absorption of certain medications. Keep out of reach of children.
