Organic Ashwagandha Extract (Withania somnifera)

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), is one of the most important adaptogenic herbs in both traditional Ayurvedic and contemporary Western herbal practice.

Ashwagandha is named for its characteristic horse-like smell (ashwa = horse, gandha = smell) and is traditionally associated with the strength and vitality of a horse. It is prepared in 60% alcohol from certified organic Ashwagandha root.

Naturally Occurring Compounds

  • Withanolides — naturally occurring steroidal lactones unique to Withania species; the primary marker compounds and key adaptogenic constituents; the most researched compounds in Ashwagandha
  • Withaferin A — the most studied individual withanolide; subject of extensive peer-reviewed research
  • Alkaloids — including somniferin, somniferine, and withanine; contribute to Ashwagandha's nervine and sedative properties

  • Iron — naturally present in the root in significant concentrations
  • Flavonoids and phenolic acids — naturally occurring antioxidant compounds

Traditional Herbal Use

Adaptogenic & Stress Wellness

Ashwagandha is one of the most important adaptogenic herbs in Ayurvedic medicine and contemporary Western herbal practice. It has a 3,000-year history of traditional use as a Rasayana tonic for physical and emotional resilience. As an adaptogen, it is traditionally used to help the body adapt to physical and mental stress, supporting the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the body's natural stress response systems.

Cortisol & HPA Axis Support

Ashwagandha is one of the most researched herbs for cortisol and HPA axis wellness. Clinical research has examined its role in supporting healthy cortisol levels and stress adaptation. It is widely used in nutritional practice for those experiencing elevated cortisol, burnout, and chronic stress.

Sleep & Nervous System Wellness

Ashwagandha is classified as a nervine and mild sedative herb in Western herbal medicine. Its alkaloid content — particularly somniferin — contributes to its traditional use for sleep and nervous system wellness. It is best taken in the evening for sleep and cortisol regulation support. Clinical research has examined its role in supporting sleep quality and nervous system recovery.

Energy, Vitality & Endurance

As a Rasayana tonic, Ashwagandha has a long traditional history of use for energy, vitality, and physical endurance. It is traditionally used to support stamina, strength, and recovery from physical exertion — making it a classic inclusion in traditional formulas for athletes and those experiencing fatigue or burnout.

Cognitive & Neurological Wellness

Ashwagandha is classified as a medhya rasayana in Ayurveda — a category of herbs traditionally used to support cognitive function, memory, and neurological wellness. Contemporary research has examined its role in supporting cognitive function and neuroprotection.

Hormonal & Thyroid Wellness

Ashwagandha has a traditional history of use in Ayurvedic medicine for hormonal and thyroid wellness. Research has examined its role in supporting thyroid hormone levels and reproductive hormonal balance in both men and women.
