Organic Oat Straw Extract (Avena Sativa)
Oat Straw is the green aerial part of the oat plant, harvested before the grain matures. The tradition of using the dried herb of the oats plant as a medicine goes back a long way, with a strong and consistent theme of use for nervous system disease and debility. It has been used across centuries of Western herbal practice for headaches, migraines, shingles, fatigue, epilepsy, degenerative wasting conditions, and as one of the most important restoratives for nervous prostration. This extract is prepared using 60% alcohol to capture a broad spectrum of naturally occurring plant compounds.
Traditional Herbal Use
Nervous System, Debility & Restoration
Oat Straw is one of the most highly regarded nervine restoratives in the Western herbal tradition. King’s Dispensatory describes oat extracts as ranking “among the most important restoratives for conditions depending upon nervous prostration, and for the nervous exhaustion consequent upon typhoid and other low fevers... In enfeebled states of the heart muscle it acts as a good tonic to improve the energy of the organ.”
Finlay Ellingwood described its physiological action as having “selective influence directly upon the brain and upon the nutritive functions of the organism, increasing nerve force and improving the nutrition of the entire system... It is a stimulant, sedative and direct nutritive tonic, apparently restoring the wasted elements of nerve force.” He noted its particular value in “the overworked conditions of brain workers; ministers, physicians or lawyers — in the general prostration from great anxiety and worry,” and in paralysis, wasting disease of the aged, nerve tremors, chorea, paralysis agitans, and epilepsy.
The British Herbal Pharmacopoeia (BHP) classifies Oat Straw as an antidepressive, thymoleptic (mood-modifying), and cardiac tonic, indicated for depression, melancholia, menopausal neurasthenia, and general debility, and specifically indicated for depressive states. The BHP recommends combining it with Skullcap.
Mental Clarity, Focus & Cognitive Endurance
Ellingwood specifically noted Oat Straw’s value for “occipital headache common with nervous exhaustion” and for brain workers experiencing mental prostration. It is traditionally used to support mental clarity, concentration, and cognitive endurance, particularly in states of overwork, anxiety, and nervous depletion.
Mood, Depression & Withdrawal Support
Oat Straw has a long traditional history of use for lifting depressed mood and supporting people withdrawing from addictive substances. King’s Dispensatory notes it “has been much used as a remedy to assist the morphine-consumer to throw off the habit, and to sustain the nervous system while undergoing that ordeal.” Ellingwood confirmed: “This agent exercises a restorative power in overcoming the habits of alcohol, tobacco, morphine, and opium... There is no danger of forming the habit of taking Avena, as it can be suddenly abandoned at any time without evil consequences.”
Cardiovascular & Circulatory Support
King’s Dispensatory notes Oat Straw’s value for “weak heart” and cardiac weakness from nervous exhaustion, and recommends it “to prevent relapsing cardiac rheumatism.” The BHP classifies it as a cardiac tonic. Avenanthramides have been studied for their role in supporting healthy circulation and vascular function.
Reproductive & Hormonal Wellness
Ellingwood described Oat Straw as having “a selective influence upon the nerve structure of the genito-urinary apparatus” and called it “a sovereign remedy in impotency” and “the remedy par excellence” in sexual neurasthenia. He also noted its value for nervous headaches of the menstrual epoch, neuralgic and congestive dysmenorrhea, and atonic amenorrhea with great feebleness. The BHP indicates it for menopausal neurasthenia.
Rheumatic, Musculoskeletal & Urinary Wellness
In Europe there is a long tradition of using Oat Straw in baths as a treatment for rheumatism and painful muscles, as well as for kidney and bladder problems.
Bone, Skin & Hair
Rich in silica, calcium, and magnesium — minerals that play a structural role in bone integrity, connective tissue, skin, and hair. Oat Straw has traditionally been used to support these systems as part of a mineral-rich herbal routine.
From the Tradition — Ellingwood on Avena Sativa
“Its selective influence is directly upon the brain and upon the nutritive functions of the organism, increasing nerve force and improving the nutrition of the entire system. The influence of a single full dose is promptly felt, similar to the influence of any active stimulant, but more permanent. It is a stimulant, sedative and direct nutritive tonic, apparently restoring the wasted elements of nerve force... In the overworked conditions of brain workers; ministers, physicians or lawyers — in the general prostration from great anxiety and worry... avena is directly indicated. In sexual neurasthenia it is the remedy par excellence.”
— Finlay Ellingwood, American Materia Medica
What the Research Shows
- In a 1968–1969 clinical study, 6 out of 10 chronic opium addicts gave up the drug after treatment with Oats tincture (2ml, three times daily) over 27–45 days. Two of the remaining four reduced their intake. Status was maintained on follow-up 3–19 months later with no serious withdrawal symptoms or side effects noted. (Anand CL, Br Med J 3(775):640, 1971)
- In a randomised, placebo-controlled clinical study involving healthy volunteers and bronchial patients who were habitual smokers, those given Oats extract (1ml tincture, four times daily for 28 days) achieved a significant reduction in tobacco use compared with controls. The reduction was still observed 2 months later. (Anand CL, Nature 223(5320):496, 1971)
- Oats extract prescribed in apple juice produced a reduction of 66% in daily cigarette consumption compared with no change for those receiving placebo. (Netherlands Patent 741265, 1976)
How to Use
Take 20–30 drops (approximately 1–1.5ml) in a little juice or water, once or twice daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Traditional doses range from 1–2ml up to three times daily. Administration in warm water is noted to produce quicker action; in cold water at night, a more extended and settling influence.
Safety
Oat Straw is considered one of the safest herbs in the Western tradition. No adverse effects are expected even in high or frequent doses. It may be confidently taken during pregnancy or whilst breastfeeding and used by the young or old with safety. There is no risk of dependency — it can be discontinued at any time without adverse consequences. If you are taking medication or have a health condition, consult your healthcare practitioner before use.
