Organic Onion Botanical Extract (Allium cepa)

Onion (Allium cepa) is one of the oldest and most widely used culinary and medicinal plants in human history, with documented use spanning over 5,000 years across Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Ayurvedic, and Chinese herbal traditions. It belongs to the Allium genus alongside Garlic, Leek, and Chives — a family of plants characterised by their rich organosulfur compound content.

Onion is one of the most abundant dietary sources of quercetin — a flavonoid antioxidant — as well as a range of other naturally occurring bioactive compounds. This extract is prepared in 60% alcohol to capture the full spectrum of water and alcohol-soluble compounds present in the bulb.

Traditional Herbal Use

Immune & Respiratory Wellness

Onion has one of the longest traditional histories of any herb for immune and respiratory wellness. It has been used across virtually every traditional herbal system for respiratory and immune support, and is a classic ingredient in traditional folk remedies for seasonal wellness.

Cardiovascular & Circulatory Wellness

Onion is one of the most widely studied foods in cardiovascular wellness research, largely due to its high quercetin content. It has a long traditional history of use in herbal practice for heart and circulatory wellness.

Digestive & Gut Wellness

Onion has a traditional history of use for digestive wellness across many herbal traditions. Its naturally occurring FOS content supports prebiotic activity in the gut. Note: not suitable for those following a low-FODMAP diet due to fructan content.

Liver & Metabolic Wellness

Onion is traditionally used in herbal practice to support liver and metabolic wellness. Its organosulfur compounds and flavonoid content have made it a traditional inclusion in formulas for liver and metabolic support.

How to Use

Take 10–30 drops under the tongue or in a little juice or water, up to 2–3 times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner.

Precautions

Not suitable for those following a low-FODMAP diet — onion is high in fructans, a type of FODMAP. Consult your healthcare practitioner before use if you have a digestive condition or are following a therapeutic diet. Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding without practitioner guidance. May interact with blood-thinning medications — consult your practitioner if you are taking anticoagulants.
