Organic Rosemary Extract (Rosmarinus officinalis)

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is a perennial aromatic shrub native to the Mediterranean basin, with a documented history of culinary and medicinal use spanning over 2,000 years across Greek, Roman, and European herbal traditions. Its name derives from the Latin ros maris — “dew of the sea” — reflecting its natural habitat along Mediterranean coastlines. It has been revered throughout history as a herb of remembrance, loyalty, and cognitive wellness, and remains one of the most widely used aromatic herbs in contemporary Western herbal practice.

Rosemary belongs to the Lamiaceae family alongside Sage, Thyme, and Oregano. It is classified as a circulatory stimulant, carminative, and nervine herb in Western herbal medicine, with a particularly well-established traditional history of use for cognitive, circulatory, and digestive wellness. This extract is prepared in 60% alcohol from certified organic Rosemary leaf.

Naturally Occurring Compounds

  • Rosmarinic acid — a naturally occurring caffeic acid ester; one of the primary antioxidant compounds in Rosemary and other Lamiaceae herbs; the subject of significant peer-reviewed scientific research interest in the context of cognitive, inflammatory, and antioxidant wellness (González-Minero et al., 2020, PMC7491497; ScienceDirect, 2021)
  • Carnosic acid and carnosol — naturally occurring diterpene phenols unique to Rosemary and Sage; among the most potent naturally occurring antioxidant compounds in the plant kingdom; key markers of Rosemary extract quality; also the subject of significant peer-reviewed research interest (PMC7491497; ScienceDirect, 2021)
  • Ursolic acid — a naturally occurring triterpenoid present in Rosemary leaf; one of the most researched naturally occurring triterpenoids in contemporary botanical science
  • Volatile oils — including 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol), camphor, α-pinene, and borneol; responsible for Rosemary’s characteristic aroma and many of its traditional circulatory and respiratory properties
  • Flavonoids — including luteolin, apigenin, and diosmin
  • Diterpenes — including betulinic acid and rosmaridiphenol

Traditional Herbal Use

Cognitive & Nervous System Wellness

Rosemary has one of the longest and most well-documented traditional associations with cognitive wellness of any herb in the Western herbal tradition — famously referenced by Shakespeare in Hamlet: “There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance.” It is classified as a nervine and cognitive tonic herb in traditional herbal practice and has been used for memory and cognitive wellness since at least the ancient Greek period. Contemporary research into Rosemary and cognitive wellness has generated significant scientific interest, particularly in relation to its naturally occurring 1,8-cineole and rosmarinic acid content.

Circulatory & Cardiovascular Wellness

Rosemary is classified as a peripheral circulatory stimulant in Western herbal medicine, with a long traditional history of use for circulatory and cardiovascular wellness. Its warming and stimulating properties have made it a classic inclusion in traditional herbal formulas for circulatory support.

Digestive & Liver Wellness

Rosemary is classified as a carminative, cholagogue, and digestive herb in Western herbal medicine, with a long traditional history of use for digestive and liver wellness. Its aromatic and bitter properties have made it a classic inclusion in traditional herbal formulas for digestive and liver support.

Hair & Scalp Wellness

Rosemary has a long traditional history of use in Western herbal medicine for hair and scalp wellness. It is one of the most widely used herbs in traditional herbal practice for hair and scalp support and has been a staple of traditional hair wellness preparations for centuries.

Antioxidant Wellness

Rosemary is one of the most antioxidant-rich herbs in the Western herbal tradition, with an exceptionally high carnosic acid, carnosol, and rosmarinic acid content. It is consistently ranked among the highest antioxidant-content herbs in botanical research and has been used as a natural food preservative for centuries due to its antioxidant properties.
