Wildcrafted Milk Thistle Botanical Extract (Silybum marianum)

Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum) is one of the most extensively researched and widely used hepatoprotective herbs in Western herbal medicine, with a documented history of traditional use spanning over 2,000 years. The seeds and fruit of Milk Thistle are the primary medicinal parts, containing the naturally occurring flavonolignan complex known as Silymarin — the key marker of Milk Thistle quality and potency.

This extract is wildcrafted and prepared in 60% alcohol from Milk Thistle seed. It is also available as a standardised capsule — see our Silymarin (Milk Thistle Blend) Capsules for the capsule option.

Naturally Occurring Compounds

  • Silymarin complex — a purified mixture of four isomeric flavonolignans: silybin A, silybin B, silychristin, and silydianin; the primary active compound complex in Milk Thistle and the key marker of quality and potency
  • Silybin (Silibinin) — the most biologically active and most extensively researched of the four Silymarin flavonolignans; the primary marker of Milk Thistle potency
  • Silychristin — the second most abundant flavonolignan in the Silymarin complex
  • Silydianin — a naturally occurring flavonolignan present in the Silymarin complex
  • Flavonoids — including quercetin and kaempferol; contributing to Milk Thistle's antioxidant profile
  • Fatty acids — including linoleic acid; naturally present in Milk Thistle seed
  • Phytosterols — naturally occurring plant sterols present in Milk Thistle seed

Liquid Extract vs Capsules — Which to Choose?

Liquid extract (this product) — faster onset of action as absorption begins in the mouth; flexible dosing; ideal for those who prefer liquid supplements or have difficulty swallowing capsules; alcohol-based extraction preserves the full spectrum of naturally occurring compounds.

Silymarin capsules — standardised dose per capsule; convenient for travel and daily routine; ideal for those who prefer a measured, consistent dose. See our Silymarin (Milk Thistle Blend) Capsules.

How to Use

Take 20–30 drops under the tongue or in a little juice or water, up to 2–3 times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Best taken before meals to support digestive and biliary wellness. Suitable for long-term tonic use.

Precautions

Generally very well tolerated. May have mild laxative effects at high doses due to its cholagogue properties. Consult your healthcare practitioner before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Consult your healthcare practitioner before use if you are taking medications metabolised by the liver (CYP450 enzymes) — Silymarin may affect the metabolism of certain medications.
